Thanks for showing me the process of how to learn; having a ‘map’ of how to approach it. I understand it is a process and a dynamic one over time and changing conditions but now feel I have a better understanding of what/how and why each setting should be approached. I like starting with one thing and changing it 25% and then another +25%, making notes and arriving at too much one way or the other and then working back and forth in smaller increments to find the right setting. As my understanding grows and the fear of unknown goes away with experience I am now confident I will soon have a setup that both works and gets the bike geometry with me on it to work in balance. Today’s ride after two days worth of stop/settings change/start/stop was fantastic, best the bike has ever felt.

Looking back on the few years I raced in the Moto America Twins Cup, I have to note the help I received along the way, which in no small part was provided by Dave Moss—frequently remotely via telephone and text. Dave has been part of my riding and racing program for almost 20 years now. Coincidentally, that relationship also started with a remote consult to fix a very ill-handling CBR600F4i, piloted by a very novice track rider (yours truly) while I was at Carolina Motorsports Park back in 2007. Back then, I had been watching his videos and messaged him with all the info I could supply about myself, the bike, and the track conditions. The improvement was dramatic, and I knew I had tapped into an invaluable resource.

Fast forward to when I got my pro race license and was competing in the Moto America Twins Cup; that routine was still in place. It was hugely instrumental in getting myself and the bike dialed in—sometimes with as little as 30 minutes of practice time prior to qualifying at tracks I had never seen and had no notes to start with.

Although I had built quite a rapport with Dave through the years in person at AFM race weekends, coaching sessions, and other track days, I have seen the same great results with many others who simply tapped into his knowledge through remote consults. In my first year on the road with Moto America, Dave and I would usually have an initial conversation over the phone to discuss the track, review where the bike was as far as settings, and establish a plan to dial it in as fast as possible. Via numerous text messages and photos back and forth, we would make the recommended changes to the bike and report back. Often, he gave me contingent instructions depending on what we saw going on with the suspension travel and the tires in the middle of a qualifying session, where I might not be able to reach him in the brief window we had. Not only did the bike consistently perform better through these adjustments, but it frequently simultaneously improved grip and tire longevity. This was crucial for the longer races, especially at tracks with harsh pavement.

The diversity of the circuits was no small hurdle to climb, not to mention that I had never ridden a bike at Pittsburgh, Barber, Indy, Road America, Utah, or The Ridge, and hadn't seen VIR or Road Atlanta in many years. While a lot of effort was put in by myself and others in my program (thank you Brian, Ron, Ryan, Tammy, Mark, and Jimmy), Dave's help was instrumental, and the results showed it. That year and every other, I never failed to make a qualifying cut and have even finished in the points on a few occasions. The first year saw some close calls in qualifying, but by the second full season, we were getting pretty dialed in and I was, on average, two seconds below the cut. Unlike club racing, if you don't make the cut at Moto America, you don't race—you pack up for the weekend. With thousands of dollars and a lot of people's time invested, it is a strong testament to how much faith I put in Dave's advice to ensure I made it to the show.

To this day, I still enlist Dave's advice for every track day, race weekend, and new street bike that comes up, and I am also proud to call him a good friend. Needless to say, as I start getting back on track after a brief hiatus, I'll do so with a bit more confidence having Dave Moss in my corner. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who enjoys the sport of motorcycle riding at any level to reach out and work with Dave for an in-person or remote consult to make their bike handle better and be safer and more fun, whatever their goals are. My results are proof of just how much can be achieved by a careful remote consultation.

Dear Dave,

Here is some feedback, I hope you appreciate it.

We went last Sunday as expected to train on the track where my son will have next race on May 25-26th. :)

Didn’t had too much time because this track is far from home and they close soon in the afternoon, but I think now we have a much better setting than before.

After a couple of initial short rounds (8-10 laps) to learn the track with the same old settings and used-abused tires, and checking that there was still some uncontrolled rebound on the front side in this track too, he started to push harder. On the 3rd round I opened the compression from -16c to -20c. He felt that the bike was easier to enter the bike in the turns. On the 4th round I opened rebound to -8c, he felt less rebound on the front and after a quick stop opened to -10c and he felt that the rebound was less noticeable but the front grip was starting to be very poor.

I decided to change the tires because the front one was completely wasted, and put a "used but in good state" set of tires front&rear. On the immediate following round he went 0.8s faster per lap (it's 52-53s lap time track) and he felt the bike much more stable with no rebound at all and also easy to move on closed turns, he was very happy with the settings!! As I said this “new" front tire was used and had some tear on the right side from the previous track day… but this right side started to clean up the tear and the left side (with is the most used in this track) came out pretty well -in my opinion- after 2 more rounds of 12 laps each one pushing very hard, now he’s just at 0.5s of the track Pole record for his category.

We didn’t had too much time to work on the rear side, anyway I was not observing bad tyre wear neither with the older tyre or with the newer tyre.

I don’t have photos of the rear shock but the zip tie to check the used travel ended around 1cm above the rubber pad, that’s fine isn’t it?

So resuming, it seems that we have a good setting for this track. We’ll be there for the race on 24th, maybe I consult you something else if possible to fine adjust in case we see some problem. :)

Hi Dave,

I hope all is well. Man, I was sick for several months, in and out of the hospital three different times. They never did figure out what was wrong, and said it would have to get worse before they could figure it out, but the pain is gone and I'm back to normal, whatever normal is, lol. I didn't think I was going to finish the engine rebuild on my S1 in time for El Mirage, which was this past weekend. I'd get out of bed, work on it for an hour, then go back to bed. But I got it finished in time.

My best speed on Saturday was 138 mph, one mph shy of the open 139 mph record in the 1350cc Modified Pushrod Gas Class. On Sunday I set the record running 140.860 mph. All the engine modifications I did since last November paid off. The old Buell with its Harley 1203cc engine ran great. It was pulling like a Freight Train in 1st through 4th gears up to 7500 RPMs. I still have to review the WEGO wide band data to see what the RPMs were when I crossed the timing lights, but it was still pulling.

Thanks to your advice in our suspension tuning sessions, the Buell was steady as a rock, even with its hard-tail rear suspension.
